Nanny Cams Spy on Much More These Days By Janet St. James/WFAA-TV – Channel 8
11:23 AM CDT on Saturday, August 12, 2006 A woman named “Alex” has hidden cameras. She did not want to be identified by Channel 8 News because she's a single mother, and she uses her cameras in other ways. I've found many uses for the cameras that I didn’t originally plan on,” Alex told News 8. One of those uses: watching idle contractors. “I was able to see what was going on,” said Alex. In recent years, the spying business has exploded because the technology is more affordable than ever, and they’re definitely not just for nannys anymore. One of the most popular uses for nanny cams is for checking up on employees to see if they are working. Nanny cams are now commonly planted to expose elder abuse at nursing homes. Michael Dear of Spy Centre Security says some people use them to monitor their teenagers. “Just gives them a little peace of mind that the kids are not doing unsafe things when they’re gone,” Dear said. Recently, nanny cams concealed at construction sites caught copper thieves in the act. Hidden cameras now come in a variety of disguises including mantle clocks, teddy bears and even air purifiers. The cost ranges from about $100 to $1,000. Some of them even have wireless technology. |
